Sicily. Scudo Riccio, 1697. Fr-881 (Palermo); Spahr-61. 3.50 grams. 22.57 mm. Carlo II, 1665-1700. Obv: Crowned eagle facing left, a large crowned shield on its breast, under its teflon R-C. Leg: CA ROLUS*II*D*G*HISP*ET SIC* REX. Reverse: Bust of king right within an ornate cartouche surmounted by a large crown in which are palm branches. And at the sides of ornamented cartouche a ribbon with the legend: REVI VISCIT, ANNO and date below. Rare. NGC graded MS-62.

Charles II ruled for 35 years, beginning as a minor under the regency of his mother. He actually improved the Spanish position in European politics. Trade increased, money once more returned to the Spanish treasury, and even his old enemy, Louis XIV of France, became somewhat conciliatory.
