Mainz was one of the great cities of medieval and renaissance Germany. It was one of the seven electors of the Holy Roman Emperors. In fact, its archbishop was president of the electoral college, and primate of Germany. The Thirty Years War and occupations by the Swedes and French destroyed the city's prosperity.
