Byzantine. Theophilus, 829-842 AD. Gold Solidus (4.43 g), Constantinople, struck c. 829-830/1 AD. Rare, more so in this grade. Facing crowned bust, wearing loros, holding globus cruciger and cruciform scepter. Reverse: Patriarchal cross on three steps. Officina X. SBC 1655; DOC 1. Crisply struck and lustrous. A splendid example of this rarity. Superb Extremely Fine.
