Lucania. Velia, c. 365-340 BC. AR Nomos (7.59 g). Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet with griffin ornament; Θ below crest. Reverse: Lion walking right, tongue lolling; X beneath belly; ethnic in exergue. Cf. SNG ANS 1303 (different letter below lion on reverse). The lion a little softly struck at the center, but Athena in exquisite classical style. Fine old toning, with hints of iridescent rose, steel blue, and greens. A very handsome example of this series. Near Extremely Fine.
