Lot 2794

Vespasian, A.D. 69-79. AR Denarius minted at Ephesus, A.D. 71. . RIC-page 54, 333. . BMC 457. Laureate head right of Vespasian. Reverse: Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm. Extremely Fine.

Note the mintmark "EPE" for Ephesus on the reverse, positioned in the lower right field. The raised circular lines, around the top of the reverse and toward the bottom of the obverse, were made by a compass in order to evenly scribe the legends in the dies. These lines tended to wear quickly, and are signs of early die states. That well matches the excellent early-die detailing of this specimen, best visible on Victory's face, wings, and hands.
Estimated Value $500 - 800.

Realized $1,438
