Lot 2712

Aelia Capitolina. Macrinus, 217-8 C.E. Billon Tetradrachm (11.93g). . Prieur 1642. Laureate head right of Macrinus. Reverse: Eagle to front standing on thyrsos, wine jar between legs; in exergue, ivy leaf. Choice Very Fine.

The Syro-Phoenician Tetradrachms and their Fractions from 57 BC to AD 253, by Michel and Karin Prieur, is an excellent example of how a first-rate academic treatise can be easily utilized and enjoyably read, as well. It was edited by friend and numismatist Italo Vecchi, and beautifully produced in 2000 by Classical Numismatic Group ("CNG"). The opus is detailed and capably organized, placing and dating these heretofore enigmatic issues.
Estimated Value $500 - 750.
