Lot 2524

Domitian, 81-96 C.E. AE 23 minted at Caesarea. . Hen-753. . AJC pl. 36, 2. Laureate head right of Domitian. Reverse: The deified Titus standing, facing to right, holding spear and parazonium. Nearly Extremely Fine.

This is certainly one of the rarest varieties minted under the Roman administration in Judaea. It seems likely that this was the first of the many coin types to be struck at Caesarea under Domitian, as it not only depicts the previous emperor on the reverse, but often has an obverse portrait more akin to Titus than to Domitian (see Bromberg I, lot 279, for example).
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

Realized $805
