Lot 1712

1869-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. Breen-7232. A frosty untoned coin with unparalleled brilliance for this very scarce issue, smooth and satiny it is. Use this piece as a guidpost when comparing other Type 2 double eagles in its grade. The take would be difficult, be we could see a collector assembling a set of twenties from the period with this coin's smooth originality. A very rare coin in Mint State. Pop 9; 5 finer in 64 (PCGS # 8956) .

Mintage: 686,750. The 1869-S is plentiful enough in circulated grades to supply collectors on moderate budgets. In the absence of known hoards of significance, Mint State coins are very rare. Most important collections of the last hundred years had VF or EF specimens.
Estimated Value $14,000 - 16,000.

Realized $19,550
