Lot 1440

1879 Pattern Dollar. Silver, reeded edge. . J-1613. . P-1809. PCGS graded Proof 64 Low Rarity 7. Nice blue and gold toning on both sides. Silver reeded edge housed in an old green label holder. One of the scarcer Patterns using the same obverse as the regular Morgan dollar of the date, as intended for Proofs, but with a tall and narrow perched eagle reverse design type. An swirling array of toning hues on both sides of this bold Pattern. The devices are frosted underneath the iridescence, with the mirrors nicely reflective and supportive. Morgan's is one of several proposals to replace the adopted eagle as it appears on the circulation strike silver dollar. A very rare Pattern $1 with unmistakable originality; virtually gem quality surfaces. Who could ask for more? Pop 3; 1 finer in 65 (PCGS # 61991) .
Estimated Value $12,000 - 14,000.
