Lot 1404

1895 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 62. Only 880 proofs struck. Mostly untoned. A key date that is known only in Proof condition. A couple of tiny toned spots on the reverse (at U of UNITED and in the left wing). This brilliant example displays uniform reflectivity as the fields gyrate under the light. Not the usual so-so toning that is heavy with conflicting shades that oftentimes obscures the beauty of the underlying surface. Further, the strike is typically full for the date with crisp hair on Liberty and a full eagle. The freedom from toning allows the mirror surface to play upon your field of vision, held back only by a few grade-limiting hairlines which are not all that visible at most angles. Records show the Philadelphia Mint delivered 12,000 business strike Morgan dollars in 1895. None have ever been certifiably identified. Either they went to the melting pots, or the Mint records are for some leftover 1894-dated coins that were not delivered until the summer of 1895. Be that as it may, we can say without fear of contradiction that Morgan dollar collectors will have to acquire a Proof 1895 such as the present choice example if they ever hope to complete a set of these impressive large silver coins. Pop 74 (PCGS # 7330) .
Estimated Value $34,000 - 36,000.
