17th Century Tamil Hindu Prayer Book. Written on 10½" x 1" palm leaves with a stylus, giving the order of worship at a local shrine in Madura, India in the 1600s. "Tamil" is the oldest known language that, to this day, remains written and understood. The text is tiny, yet sharp and clear; the palm leaves are held together by two small wood planks that were "holed" and remained in place with a pair of simple wooden pins. One pin is missing and is temporarily held together with a length of think rope. Accompaned by a century-old tag with a penned notation, "Old Hindu book on palm leaf…Madura, India…J.T. Tracy." Of special interest to the linguist or antiquarian book enthusiast.
