1798 Encyclopedia; Or A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Miscellaneous Literature, Vol XVIII. Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson. 1st American Edition. 11" x 9" x 3½" thick, with original lmarble boards, leather corners, and leather gold-stamped title spines and tight binding. Light overall age toning and occasional foxing, but bright and fresh with very clear text. This volume covers the letters "STR-ZYM" and has 58 copper-plate illustrations. Topics include: an extensive description of Surgery, with six full-page engravings; a section on Naval Tactics with seven plates showing warship battle positions; a section on Telegraph and Telescope, with a full-page engraving of Herschel's Grand Telescope; and a large section on WAR with 21 full-page plates.
