(Hawaii) Montagu, John - 4th Earl of Sandwich. Oversize folding document on four sheets of vellum, Signed "Sandwich" twice, once alonside his personal seal in red wax, and once on the verso of the 4th vellum sheet, 23" x 29½", Somerset, 23 Mar. 1743. Fine; folded; minor age yellowing and light exterior soiling; a couple of small holes in the vellum. Concerning the sale of property at Enmore in Somerset by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich to Robert Long. First page (in back) has scalloped to edge and British coat of arms. Each page bears three British revenue stamps.

John Montagu (1718-92), fourth Earl of Sandwich, was first Lord of the Admiralty during the American Revolution. He assisted Captain Cook in fitting out his fleet in 1778, and the Sandwich Islands (later called Hawaii) were named after him. He was Secretary of State for the Northern Department before being appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Montagu succeeded his grandfather to the title in 1729 at the age of eleven.
