Lot 199

1877 Indian Head Cent. Proof 64 Red and Brown. Here it is, the Chief of the Indians, the famed 1877 in very choice Proof condition. Nearly full red on both sides, without spots or other problems. The original color is slightly mellowed by time, and the surfaces retain all the mirror reflectivity imparted by the dies. Mintages peetered out in 1877, the national economy tipped into yet another short--but sharp-- depression, demand for coins dwindled. A meager 510 proof cents were struck, few of which survive in even choice condition. Total mintage for circulation was 852,500, the lowest of the series except for the 1909-S, which was saved in great quantities. Few 1877s were saved, making this rare Proof even more desirable.

Realized $3,680
