Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 4

Lot 1978

Outstanding Key Date 1921 $20 Gold. PCGS graded MS-64 Premium Quality. A nice choice coin with few marks, none large, and an old-time "dirty" look--indicating it has probably never been dipped. Its luster is therefore somewhat subdued, and in fact a judicious bath could very well bring out this coin's brilliance. As is, it has its own appeal, with that famous pale greenish hue to the gold. Liberty's face (nose especially) is well struck, something often missing on these. As a 64, it ranks up there among the best available. PCGS has graded 6 pieces as MS63, just 3 in this MS64 grade, and but a single coin MS65, and none better. Even with its relatively low mintage, you might expect more 1921s to have shown up for certification. But melts have taken their toll, and gold collectors have precious few to fight over. This is one of the nicest of them.
