Lot 805

1840 Coronet Head Cent. . N-4, R3-. VF-30 The so-called 40 over 39 Overdate. At least 5 points sharper with a rim bruise at star 12 and a few light contact marks scattered about the obverse. Glossy chocolate and steel brown. E-MDS, die state b, with rim cud breaks from below the 18 in the date to star 3. There is a deep struck-through void on the reverse slanting from the T in CENT to the end of the wreath ribbon (caused by debris on the die). The die defects at the date that are sometimes called evidence of an overdate (which they are not) are clear. The reverse is rotated 30 degrees CCW from a normal head-to-foot orientation.
Estimated Value $40 - 80.
Ex Jim Corrado.
