Lot 1888

1928-S Peace Dollar. PCGS graded MS-65. Satiny and with a hint of light lilac tone. A major rarity in such high grade. This is a truly exceptional representative of a conditionally challenging San Francisco Mint issue. Both sides are uncommonly well struck with bold-to-sharp detail characterizing all elements of the design. The surfaces are also carefully preserved with few abrasions and none that are worthy of singular concern. Fully lustrous with the lightest overlay of tannish-silver tinting, this rare Gem would serve as a pride and joy in the finest Peace Dollar set.

Along with the 1924-S and 1925-S, the 1928-S is one of the most difficult Peace Dollars to locate with strong eye appeal. Most of this 1.6 million-coin delivery possess unduly soft striking detail, and many are also sprinkled with detracting bagmarks. A Gem of this quality represents a significant find in today's market, and examples that grade at or above the Mint State 65 level are of the utmost rarity and desirability.

The influential former American Numismatic Association Historian Farran Zerbe is the man whom the credit for this beautiful Silver Dollar type goes. Zerbe did not design the Peace Dollar, but he did present a paper at the 1920 Chicago ANA Convention that called for a circulating coin to commemorate the return of peace after the end of World War I. Since silver dollar production resumed in 1921 pursuant to the terms of the Pittman Act, Zerbe's proposal came to realization through that denomination instead of a half dollar. Pop 40; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 7374) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 16,000.
