1872 Shield Nickel. PCGS graded Proof 66. A crisply struck Shield nickel glowing with Proof-fresh glow from the fields, the devices struck with fine detail, and not at all deficient. This is one of the slightly scarcer Proofs from the early 1870s. Equestrian enthusiasts will remember the year from their history lessons as -- we are not making this up -- The Great Epizootic of 1872. Only 950+ Proofs struck (PCGS # 3826) .
