Lot 440

1920 Pilgrim Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-65. Very beautifully toned. In fact, wonderful deep red and gold toned surfaces eddy and churn with almost "frothy" luster on a base of neutral "old silver" patina that attests to its long residence in an old coin envelope.

The familiar elementary school "look" of the pilgrim is something of a stretch. As depicted in paintings and drawings of the era, Pilgrim men wore a variety of hats not only to protect themselves from the weather but also for pure adornment. It would not be unusual to see a hat with a brightly colored band or feather tucked inside (belt buckles were an addition of the late 17th century).
Estimated Value $475 - 525.

Realized $546
