Cumberland Bank of Alleghany $5.00 Note, Cumberland, MD, Proof. PCGS Choice New 63. This note has a vignette of early downtown Cumberland along with covered wagons and oxen in the foreground. As Cumberland grew into a commercially important center in the early part of the 19th century, several banks emerged to service the needs of the populous. This is a proof from one of the more prolific issuers of the day. However, it should still be noted that virtually all notes from this bank, this one included, are R-7. Not pictured in Shank's Maryland reference book, this proof is quite possibly unique. Haxby Md-160-G56 (SENC), Shank 30.3.11p.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,350.
The Rob Lehmann Collection.

Realized $1,121
