Chesapeake & Ohio Canal $2.00 Note, Cumberland, MD. PCGS Apparent Fine 12. PCGS notes small holes and edge damage. This note was issued on May 1, 1838 by George Hoblitzel, a contractor on sections 353 and 356 of the C & O canal. Hoblitzel was also a prominent proprietor of a store in downtown Cumberland, MD. These notes were commonly accepted, not only by the issuer, but other local merchants throughout the area, as well. It is obvious that this one saw it's fair share of circulation. But in the same breath, we know of no others, and it's quite possibly unique. R-7, Shank 24.6.6.
Estimated Value $800 - 1,200.
The Rob Lehmann Collection.
