Lot 3804

1837 $5 Classic Head. NGC graded MS-64. Well struck and very frosty. Popular classic head type. Brilliant and refreshingly clean for this issue, an early half eagle that rarely comes with this scintillating mint frost. The surfaces flickering luster in the fields and reveal nice sun drenched golden devices. The fields are untoned and satin with much eye-appeal. It is interesting to see, as well, that it was struck from well-prepared dies that imported a sound and in point of fact, a bold design in the key areas.

A wonderful piece to include in a gold Type set, certainly one of the finest offered in recent times (the Harry Bass coin graded MS66). This is almost certainly the freshest example that bidders will see, since most known business strike 1837 half eagles in existence are either indifferently made or worn to some degree, regardless of variety.

McCloskey-2B. Block 8, single forehead curl. With berry in branch, no tongue, arrow feather over center of 5. Common variety. Perfect dies. Plainly repunched 5 (5D) at top. Pop 6; 2 higher.
Estimated Value $25,000 - 30,000.
