Lot 1556

1855 Silver Three Cents. PCGS graded Proof 64. Well struck with natural toning. Probably 30-35 Proofs are left in collectors' hands today, making this a very rare issue. It is likely that all were offered as part of the copper-silver Proof sets of the year, meaning that perhaps as many as 50-60 sets were originally produced. Proofs of this issue show die file marks near STAT(ES O)F. The digits in the date are prominently double punched with the original numerals too low, with all devices crisp and sharp. Apparently the Mint had difficulty with other Proofs. The Proof 1855 Dime is also prominently double punched and some of the half dollars are overdates.

The surfaces on this piece are smoothly mirrored with a deep overlay of gray and steel iridescence. toning on each side. Identifiable by a curved lint mark to the left of the denomination and a short, straight one to the right. Extremely rare and one of the choicest examples known. Pop 3; 5 finer; 3 in 65; 2 in 66. (PCGS # 3702) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,500.
