Lot 1234

Great Britain. Proof 2 Pounds, 1826. S.3799; Fr-374; WR-228 (Rarity-2). George IV. Bare head style engraved by Merlen, who styled this portrait after the marble bust of the king by Chantrey. Raised Lettered edge (regnal date SEPTIMO). Very rare, perhaps 225 struck, as issued in the Proof sets of this year. Most of the larger gold coins of this style, seen these days, are badly impaired from poor handling over the past 180 years. This specimen is the exception to the rule. A lovely choice proof with deep cameo contrast in the king's portrait and also in the reverse shield, both of which are heavily frosted. The fields are deeply mirrored. Fine, very light hairlines on the obverse field are very minor distractions that detract only slightly from the sheer beauty of this truly rare gold coin. NGC graded Proof 64 Ultra Cameo.
Estimated Value $8,500 - 10,000.
