Archive Of A 19th Century California Judge. An archive from the family of Elisha Cotton Winchell, whose family originated in Massachusetts and in 1837 moved to Elmira, Missouri. (an 1898 47-page, typed document recalls the family's journey). The family moved to Sutter's Fort in 1850 and settled in Sacramento, then Fresno, and finally Oakland. Winchell was a lawyer, tax accessor, councilman and judge in Oakland. This collection includes checks, court documents, biographies, and some 20 photographs (many c. 1890), ranging in size from cabinet photos to 11"x14". Should be seen to be appreciated.
