Sons of Veterans of the Civil War Sword. Established in 1881, this prominent Civil War related society, went through several name changes over its life. Known as Sons of Veterans (SV) in its early days, after 1904 it became the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUV). Membership required direct or close descent from a Union ancestor who served honorably during the war. It is still active with over 3500 members presently and operates a Civil War museum in Philadelphia.

This ca. late 19th century sword, from the earlier period of the society is marked "SV". Overall length is 36 1/2", with an etched and decorated steel blade maker named "Liller & Co. Columbus Ohio" with a crested helmet impressed logo. The handle is gilt bronze with a wire wrapped sharkskin grip. The guard is decorated with Union patriotic symbols. The 31 inch nickel plated scabbard has bronze fittings, rings and tip protector. The blade with signs of rust having been removed and the gilding substantially worn off. Light oxidation to the scabbard, but no damage or bends.
