(Lincoln, Abraham) The Richmond Times, April 21 & 22, 1865. Extremely rare issues of The Richmond Times, being the first two issues published in the former Confederate capital after it was occupied by Federal troops, 4pp each, 19" x 11½". Very good; some toning and wear to small areas. The first issue contains detailed reports of "The Great Tragedy! Particulars of the Assassination! The President's Death-Bed Scene! Funeral Ceremonies"; "The evacuation of Richmond. A Complete History," etc. The second issue contains "The President's Remains. Their Removal to Illinois. Condition of Mr. Seward. Address of President Johnson," as well as information about the assassination and the arrest and questioning of various people, including the actress Laura Keene, who was arrested and then discharged. Richmond was evacuated on 2 April 1865. On 3 April Federal troops under Major General Godfrey Weitzel received the city's surrender and occupied it. These two issues of the newly-published Richmond Times are of great historic interest.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.
