(Smith, Captain John). Late 17th or early 18th century nine-panel engraving from a history book, showing the travels of Captain John Smith amongst the Turks and Tartars. Printed in London by James Reeve; matted and framed to 17x20". Fine. In 1600, before Smith's adventures in America and his famous rescue by Pocahontas, he joined with Austrian forces to fight the Turks in Hungary and Translyvania, where he was wounded, captured and sold as a slave to a Turk. He managed to escape and returned to England in the winter of 1604-5.
