Calvert, Charles - 3rd Lord Baltimore. Document Signed "Charles Calvert" as Lieutenant General of Maryland, 1p, vellum, 11¾x14½", Saint Marys, 6 Dec. 1664. Good condition; vellum is wrinkled and toned, with a couple of holes affecting text; signature is light but legible. Granting some 200 acres in Saint Mary's County to John Halfhead, for transporting four new inhabitants to Maryland. "Together with all rights profits and benefits…all nigros Excepted…." There are numerous Catholic references in the document. Calvert was the son of Cecil Calvert (the first Lord of Baltimore) and played an important role in protecting Catholics in Maryland from Protestant encroachment. Accompanied by a text transcription. Scarce !
