Lot 271

(Besallion, Peter) 1712 Indian Trader Bond Release. A rare bond release between John Treson, animal trapper and skinner of Philadelphia, and Peter Besallion, the famous French Indian trader and interpreter, 1p, 13x8¼", 27 June 1712. Very good; scattered spotting and edge chips, but easily readable and quite rare. Treson signed with his mark in the presence of two witnesses; his red wax seal is intact. The document is a "…Release and for ever quit claim unto Peter Besallion of Philadelphia Indian Trader" from any judgments, transactions, quarrels, controversies, trespasses, etc. Treson and Besallion obviously had some sort of partnership. Besallion was licensed by the colony of Pennylvania, although as a French national and Roman Catholic, he was considered an alien. He maintained significant trading among the Conestoga Indians, the Delaware, and other tribes, and was a close friend of James Logan, William Penn's personal secretary. Accompanied by photocopies of Pennsylvania Provincial Council records that list Besallion and his important connections to the Province as an Indian trader and translator.
Estimated Value $900 - 1,200.
Mary Gardner estate.
