The American Museum, 1788 Edition. Published and edited by Matthew Carey, part of a 12 Vol. edition that ran from 1787 to 1792. This volume covers July-December of 1788, 592 pages. It has a forward letter written by George Washington and Benjamin Rush and a long formal dedication to Washington. The lengthy list of subscriber's names include Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington. The book is of miscellany of historical and anecdotal pieces. The July section has a many-page description of the parade that was held in Philadelphia in celebration of the proclamation and ratification of the Constitution. It also contains poetry, and diatribes against slavery. Original leather boards have been reattached with original title label and a new date-stamped label at base of spine.
