O'Higgins, Bernardo (1778-1842) South American revolutionary and ruler (1817-23) of Chile. Document Signed "O'Higgins" as supreme dictator of Chile, 1p, 12½x8½", Santiago, 31 Dec. 1822. Very good; uneven left margin affects a few letters of the document but does not touch O'Higgins' signature. Giving orders regarding some troops. On February 12, 1818, O'Higgins proclaimed Chile's independence, but some of his reforms aroused opposition. Only 28 days after signing this document, he was forced to resign and exiled to Peru, where he remained until his death.
