"Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States." Farewell address given 17 September 1796, printed by C.S. Van Winkle, New York, 1812, 6½x4½", 47pp. Published for the Washington Benevolent Society. Original marbled boards, calfskin spine; frontispiece portrait of Washington. Light toning throughout; leather and marbled binding is tight, with some wear to edges. Partly-printed certification page, after title page, admits Elijah bottwood to the Benevolent Society of the County of Hampshire, town of Northampton. The Washington Benevolent Societies were in fact activist Federalist political groups who traded heavily on their Washington association; this publication can actually be viewed as a campaign item from the presidential election year of 1812.
Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,500.
