Landseer, Sir Edwin Henry (1802-1873) Favorite painter of Queen Victoria. Autograph Letter Signed "Landseer," on blue stationery, 1½ pp, 6¼x4", St. John's Wood Road N.W., 16 May 1865. Fine. In part: "I am not able to give attention to any thing till after the 19th (when Her M goes North) - for whom I am working against time…." On May 8th, Landseer posed Queen Victoria seated on a horse held by her devoted servant John Brown [their relationship was the subject of the 1997 film Mrs. Brown] for a photograph which became the basis of the chalk drawing, "Her Majesty At Osborn In 1866." This drawing, now in the Royal Collection, was made into a popular print commonly called "Sorrow." Landseer was rushed because the Queen's annual summer visit to Balmoral could not be postponed.
Estimated Value $350 - 500.
