Lot 1305

1859-O $20 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. Only 9100 struck semi-reflective surfaces. Pop 7; 17 finer. Nice golden toning. Another rare date in outstanding condition. The surfaces show very few handling marks, as do virtually none of the other coins from this Mint, which shows that the New Orleans double eagles circulated especially hard, just like the Ccs that commenced coinage in 1870. Smooth golden orange finish is the rule here, yet these were not saved, but spent for needed supplies of life, an activity that led directly to this date's rarity. To preserve such a coin in this condition was a matter of chance, which may explain why the Breen encyclopedia estimated that 99 percent of these were melted, lost or simply disappeared. A coin that deserves special attention and a solid bid (PCGS # 8927) .
Estimated Value $22,000 - 27,000.
