1855-S $20 Liberty. NGC graded AU-55. Such was the flood of gold issuing from the Sierra Nevada foothills that the gold rush "rushed" the federal government to establish a Western mint, the first one authorized. San Francisco began producing double eagles in 1854 and continued with large mintage in 1855, the year of t his handsome, lustrous coin. In later days, many of these were returned for melting. Pop 133. (PCGS # 8916) .
