Gates, Horatio (1728-1806) American Revolutionary War officer. Partly-printed Document Signed "Gates," and accomplished in his hand, 2 ½"x3 ¼", New York, Bowery, 1792 Feb. 13. Being a receipt for two pounds eleven shillings and four pence for hay. The receipt is printed on laid paper and has a decorative border. With small engraving of Gates. At one time, Gates was considered a serious rival of George Washington, but after the unsuccessful Conway Cabal and his defeat at Camden, Gates was disgraced. After the Revolutionary War, he moved to New York.
