Charles II (1630-1685) King of England and Scotland. Autograph Letter Signed (with sign manual), 1 p., 7¾"x6", n.p., n.d., "friday afternoone" (early 1660s). With holograph address leaf, "For the Chancelor." Very good; some soiling, inlaid address leaf. To Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon.

The King writes with urgency: "There are many thinges of great importance to be thought of, in particular that of Ireland, as likwise there is some inteligence come to me this day, that rogues in the army are hatching villany against me wh[ich] must be timely prevented. It would be very necessary that insteed of going tomorrow to the Par[liame]nt you would come hether, at least that you would dine heere."

The first Earl of Clarendon (1609-1674) was chief minister to Charles II after his restoration. Clarendon became identified with a series of highly restrictive religious laws, the Clarendon Code, which tightened restrictions on Presbyterians, Catholics, and other non-conforming sects. In 1668, Clarendon was used as a scapegoat for the Second Dutch War and impeached by the House of Commons for high treason; he fled to France.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
