Santa Anna, Antonio Lopez de (1794-1876) Mexican general and politician. Letter Signed "Ant. Lopez de Santa Anna," 1p, in Spanish, 6"x8¼", 1825 June 27. Very good; overall light foxing. To the Extraordinary Envoy & Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States of America: "I have received your note inviting me to join you for dinner in celebration of the anniversary of the Independence of those same states and in reply thereunto I declare to you that I shall have the high honor of appearing personally to celebrate such a pleasing and solemn day…." The Santa Anna of Alamo infamy was eleven years in the future when the young military officer graciously accepted an invitation to celebrate the independence of the United States.
