Beria, Lavrenty P (1899-1953) Head of Stalin security agency, the NKVD, he oversaw the Great Purge of 1934-38 and ordered the death of thousands; he was tried and executed when he attempted to succeed Stalin. Document Signed on NKVD letterhead, in Russian, 3pp, 12"x8", 1940 Jan. 4. Fine; file holes in margin. A report marked "Top Secret" in red, sent to the head of the Red Army, Kliment Voroshilov (1881-1969) about the situation on the finnish front. In small part, "…Troops of 104th Infantry Division…are supplied with ammunition and food for only four days. Not enough horses, transports…soldiers of 18th Division, being encircled by enemies, don't have enough food…eat horse meat…damaged tanks because of the lack of spare parts…forty damaged tanks are not evacuated from battlefield in the 35th Light-Tank Brigade…."
