Hamilton, Alexander (1757-1804) American politician; leader of the Federalists; first Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. Letter Signed "A. Hamilton" as Secretary of the Treasury, 2pp, 12"x7½", Treasury Department, 1791 Aug. 26. Matted to show both sides of letter to 18"x21½". Fine; a few edge chips. To John Brown, a lawyer and Virginia congressman who introduced the petition for Kentucky statehood and who served as senator from Kentucky when that state was admitted to the Union. Hamilton writes regarding the contract for the Baltimore firm of Elliott and Williams to supply western military posts. In part: "…there appears to have been a misapprehension of the purport of my communication to you. I said, that I had advanced within four or five thousand Dollars of the whole sum, which it appeared probable would be due according to an estimate made between the Secretary of War - the Agents of Messrs. Elliot and Williams - and myself, from the best documents and materials in the possession of all the Parties; not according to the estimate of Messrs Elliot & Williams….it is desireable that the truth should be understood with precision…."
Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000.
