Lot 513

1900, $10,000 Gold Certificate. Fr-1225. Stencil cancelled. A total of 363,000 notes were printed. Those still outstanding came from the December 13, 1935 fire at the U.S. Post Office at 12th and Pennsylvania Avenues in Washington, D.C. In a fruitless attempt to keep the fire from gutting the building, waste paper was thrown out of the windows. This paper included some of these cancelled $10,000 notes that were carried by the wind to the hands of surprised passers-by. Even though these cancelled notes are not redeemable they are a popular collector item. The present note has less water staining than is normally found on these. A nice, original example! PCGS graded Choice Uncirculated 64PPQ.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.

Realized $3,105
