Scotland. Pattern Crown, 1716. S.5731. James VIII of Scotland (The Old Pretender), struck in silver by Matthew Young (c.1828) from dies prepared by the engraver Roettier. Plain edge. Laureate and draped bust facing right. Reverse: Crowned shield of arms. This is arguably one of the most beautiful and sought after pattern crowns of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Richly toned this example is as fine as any which has appeared on the market during the last few decades. Absolutely as struck it exhibits small rust marks-typical of all known example and a testimony to its authenticity. NGC graded MS-64.
