1899, $5 Silver Certificate. Fr-277. PCGS graded Very Good 10.
The Indian appearing on this note was photographed by the Bureau of Ethnology. He was a typical Native American: his headdress was three upright eagle feathers. However, when this portrait was tried on the design of the note, the feathers projected too high to look well. A Pawnee war bonnet was procured from the National Museum but (as records indicate), the Indian refused to pose with it, as it belonged to a rival tribe. The bonnet was posed on an employee of the Engraving Division and photographed; was cut out and placed on the photograph of "Running Antelope" (correct name), and engraved by G. F. C. Smillie, of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, in November, 1899. Running Antelope was a member of the Uncpapa or Hunkpapa Sioux.
