Lot 2278

World War II Survival Kit. Also known as a DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE GOLD BARTER KIT. Consists of: 10 franc, 20 franc, ½ sovereign (2), 1 sovereign, gold rings (3).

These historic kits were made for use by men involved in clandestine operations, paratropers, certain fliers, and military personel dropped behind enemy lines in Europe during World War I. It would be difficult to find a more numismatic relic of that war.

These kits were advertised to have one British or South African sovereign, two half-sovereigns, a French 20 franc and a 10 franc piece. In addition, each kit contained three gold rings. The numismatic publications stressed that no thought was given to the condition of the coins when the kits were assembled and that many might contain coins in only very good condition. The object of the kit was to provide an allied agent with a treasury which would provide the means of persuading a person in Germany or the Nazis occupied areas to assist him in his operation or provide him with military information. If he was a pilot who had been shot down the gold could help him escape capture and internment. The plan probably worked because even in a fascist state there is a built-in feature of a desire by the citizens to "beat the system." As gold was very valuable during the war, the allied fighter had a good chance of obtaining help.

This set is sealed in hard black rubber and is unopened. Stamped is "If Found Return to NavAirLant Conal 34 Norfolk Virginia and stamped 1152.
