Lot 2

Republic of Hawaii $5.00 1895. HI-5 Signatures-Various hand signed. S/N 338 pp C. PMG graded Very Fine 25 pinholes. Uncancelled. Extremely rare. Reportedly only 15 uncancelled silver certificates are known (one of which may be a forgery). The last time we handled an example was 30 years ago, the A.J. Ostheimer specimen in the Superior Stamp & Coin Co. Sale February, 1975, lot 1492 and graded Very Good.

In the first few years of the newly formed Republic of Hawaii, the minister of finance ordered and issued these certificates of deposit. President Sanford B. Dole of the Republic of Hawaii (whom also became the Territory's first governor) in 1895 signed the act which replaced all previous currency laws of the kingdom. The act authorized the notes to be redeemable in U.S. gold and the silver notes, such as offered here, to be redeemable in Hawaiian 1883 silver coin or U.S. silver coins.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,500.

Realized $8,913
