Lot 108

1880, $1 United States Note. Fr-30. A refreshingly attractive Gem specimen of this early Type featuring a large spiked brown shield and red serial numbers. Fourth Issue design. All notes of this issue were printed under authority of the Congressional Act of March 3, 1863. The notes issued were from 1 to 10,000 Dollars and include the series of 1869, 1874, 1878, 1880, 1907, 1917 and 1923. The notes of 1869 are titled "Treasury Notes;" all later issues are titled "United States Notes." However, the obligation on all series is the same. "The United States will pay to bearer dollars…. This note is a legal tender at its face value for all debts public and private, except duties on imports and interest on the public debt." Although not specifically stated, United States Notes could be redeemed at any bank or at the Treasury for gold or silver coin (except in the period before 1879 when the country was on a dual standard system, with specie bringing a premium over the same nominal dollar amount in paper money). PCGS graded Gem Uncirculated 65PPQ.
Estimated Value $1,100 - 1,500.
