Large Patch of Woolly Mammoth Hair. This exceedingly rare specimen of mammoth hair consists of both types of hair present: the long reddish-brown outer hair, as well as the soft tan inner hair. There is over ten times as much hair in this lot as is normally offered. More than 30,000 years old, this remarkable specimen comes from the frozen carcass of one of only 12 Woolly Mammoths found frozen in the permafrost of the Indigirka Basin in Siberia. This specimen was part of the collection owned by Dr. Gennady Baryshnikov, head of the History of Faunas Department, Zoological Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad.
