Muhammad Ali Inscribed and Signed Training Glove. Everlast Boxing Glove Inscribed, "To Mort From Muhammed Ali - Frazier in 11," in ballpoint, inside the wrist. Ali sparred with this glove while training for the "Fight of the Century," held on March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden. The celebrated bout was Ali's opportunity to recapture the heavyweight crown, which had been stripped from him in 1967 after he refused to enter military service. Frazier's victory in a 15-round decision gave Ali his first-ever defeat. Ultimately, however, "The Greatest" would prevail, avenging the loss in the second and third installments of the Ali-Frazier trilogy. The maroon lace-up glove exhibits nice overall use and has an "Everlast - Made in U.S.A." label prominently featured on the writst. An identification number, "21086," is printed on the palm side, near the end of the laces. Accompanied by a large photo of Ali, in training for the fight, taking the glove off to give to Mort Sharnik, the renowned sports journalist, CBS boxing executive, and fight promoter, to whom Ali inscribed the glove, as well as a signed Letter of Authenticity from Mort Sharnik.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,500.
