Lawrence, Gertrude. Photograph Signed and Inscribed to Tyrone Power: "Smile damn you, smile!! Gertrude Lawrence. Saipan, 1945," 9¾ x 13 in., matted and framed to 14 x 16¾ in. During World War II, Lawrence and Power were among the stars who traveled to various theaters of war to entertain Allied troops. This photo, which came out of Tyrone Power's estate, shows the two stars in military fatigues, making a radio broadcast. Lawrence, who was the first star of "The King and I" on the stage, is smiling broadly, while matinee idol Power's smile is not as broad. Her inscription urges him on.
